Microsoft is bringing AI to Windows PCs, seeking to perform more tasks on the local machine rather than in the cloud, where they would typically leverage Azure data centers.
Introduced (MXC) Microsoft Execution Containers: The company has developed Microsoft Execution Containers (MXC), a security measure to prevent AI agents from accessing data or performing unwanted tasks.
New local AI models are available, including Nvidia’s Nemotron and DeepSeek V4 — the latter of which requires a PC with at least 60 GB of memory.
Microsoft is also expanding its AI ecosystem, and has partnered with Anthropic, OpenAI and Nvidia, while Windows apps are set to support Meta’s Muse assistant.
Cost could be an issue, with the Surface Laptop Ultra starting at $2,599 and can cost up to $5,899.
Microsoft developed an AI coding model that can run directly on the PCs, along with Microsoft Execution Containers (MXC), a security technology devised to inhibit AI agents from accessing data or execution unauthorized operations. A push by the company to embrace more AI on PCs and compete with Apple’s power in the AI hardware space.
The company unveiled the Surface Laptop Ultra from Microsoft, which is powered by Nvidia’s RTX Spark chips and showcased models that can run locally, including Nvidia’s Nemotron and DeepSeek V4 requires at least 60 GB of computer memory.
Copilot will continue to rely on the cloud for intensive tasks that require higher computing, while local models may offer reduced costs or enhanced privacy. Anthropic, OpenAI and Nvidia are expected to utilize MXC, while Meta’s Muse assistant is set to debut on Windows.
This strategy could offload some AI computations from Azure data centers to users’ PCs. However, the hardware cost is a key challenge, with the Surface Laptop Ultra starting at $2,599, with a high-end configuration priced at $5,899 . Increasing memory prices may become an affordability issue for most buyers.
